Widening participation is a government policy, launched in 2000, with the stated aim of increasing participation in Higher Education to 50% of young people between the ages of 18 and 30 by 2010. By 2005/6, the figure stands at approximately 43/44%, although this masks some sharp disparities in terms of such features as geographical location (particularly at Ward level), ethnicity, social class and type of entry qualification.
The Faculty of Humanities, Law and Social Science is working hard to reach the target, address the disparities, raise aspirations, improve attainment and support potential and existing students generally through the work of the Widening Participation and Student Support office.
