Mother Tongue Other Tongue 2013

A Laureate Education Project.

A multilingual poetry competition that celebrates cultural diversity and the many
languages currently spoken in schools in the UK.

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a national project, led by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Director of the
Manchester Writing School at MMU. An idea originally developed by the Faculty of Humanities, Languages and
Social Science at MMU and Routes into Languages North West, this exciting project is being rolled out nationally
as this year’s Laureate Education Project, with regional events and competitions taking place throughout 2013.

  • Mother Tongue encourages children, who do not have English as a first language, or who speak a different language at home, to share a lullaby, poem or song from their Mother Tongue and to explain what it means to them.

  • Other Tongue encourages children learning another language to use that language creatively by writing a poem
    in that Other Tongue.

The first of the regional launches took place in the North West on 30th January 2013, with subsequent regions
across England and Wales planning launches for their projects throughout the year. In November 2013, regional
winners from across the country will convene at MMU for a national celebration of the diverse range of languages
and cultures that make up the United Kingdom today.
