What is UNIWIDE?

An opportunity for all students at MMU to develop foreign language skills from beginners to mastery level.

Why do it?

Foreign language knowledge provides a clear advantage in today’s job market and it’s fun!

Which languages can I do?

Arabic, Chinese, English as a Foreign Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish.

Which levels are available in 2012-13?

Beginners: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish
Elementary: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish Intermediate: (Post-GCSE): French, German, Spanish
Post-Intermediate: French, German, Spanish
Pre-Advanced: (Post-A-level): French, Spanish
Advanced: French
Proficiency: Arabic, English as a Foreign Language
Mastery: English as a Foreign Language

What sort of language is it?

The main emphasis is on the development of practical language skills. Classes focus on communicative competence and teach all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

How many hours per week?

One three-hour class slot per week – , supported by Moodle and a range of self-study materials.

When do the classes take place?

Classes  for 1st and 2nd year students start on 7th January 2013 and finish on 22nd March 2013.

Can anyone do it?

Yes. The language modules can either be taken as a credit bearing elective where the Parent Degree allows this, or as an addition to the main Degree on a fee-paying basis.

What do the modules cost?

The modules are free of charge when taken as part of a degree. If taken in addition to a degree, 15-credit modules cost £195 and 20-credit modules cost £260.

Do I need to enrol?

Yes, you must enrol in person: 24th – 26th September 2012, 10 am – 3 pm, Mabel Tylecote Building, Media Centre, 1st floor.
