Pre-Sessional English Language Courses

Our Pre-Sessional courses are designed to give you the best possible preparation for success on undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses at MMU.

The pass rate of students who attend our Pre-Sessional courses is very high. In recent years, over 90% of students have been accepted onto their chosen degree courses as a result of successfully completing their Pre-Sessional courses.

What you’ll learn

The course will help you review and develop every aspect of your general and academic English. We will help you feel more confident in the following areas

· Grammar accuracy with the main tenses of English, with a focus on sentence structure and linking ideas

· Vocabulary development with a focus on general and semi-specialised topics

· Writing skills, including brainstorming, drafting, checking for errors, appropriate formats and registers for different types of text

· Speaking with greater fluency and accuracy in a variety of general and academic contexts, dealing with problems, clarifying what you mean, maintaining interaction

· Reading a variety of longer and more complicated texts on general and semi-specialised topics relevant to university studies

· Listening to both fast spoken informal English and English used in academic contexts such as in lectures and seminars

· Critical thinking practice will help you understand arguments, evaluate ideas, demonstrate an awareness of logic and logical problems in texts of different sorts.

Guaranteed progression

When you study on our Pre-Sessional English course, you will be eligible for guaranteed progression onto your chosen course at MMU as long as you meet these conditions:

1 You must have a conditional offer of a place on a course, and the condition must refer to the level of English required for entry onto that course.

2 You must provide us with evidence that you meet the entry level requirement of our Pre-Sessional course, and your IELTS score must be no more than 1.0 below the English requirement specified for your chosen course.

3 You must attend at least 90% of the Pre-Sessional course.

4 You must complete all the coursework and assessments required on time and to a satisfactory level.

Payments of the course fees are normally non-refundable except in the case of visa application refusal. Applicants are required to provide a copy of all documentation relating to the visa refusal. In other exceptional circumstances (e.g. illness) the refund shall be at the discretion of the Head of Department. Please note that an administration fee of 10% of the payment made applies.
