Dr Carmen Herrero

Section Leader of Spanish

Responsibilities

 

Carmen teaches Hispanic cinema and culture at undergraduate level:  Aesthetic Traditions in Spanish Cinema and Power and Culture in the Hispanic World. She is also involved with the MA TEFL (Film Pedagogy).

 

She supervises and examines doctoral students on a range of topics, including Hispanic cinemas, film pedagogy and language education; new technologies and education; and Spanish literature (particularly Ramón Gómez de la Serna and Juan Manuel de Prada). She has supervised PhDs on contemporary Spanish Theater; contemporary Spanish Literature; and Basque and Catalan cinemas.

 

She is currently co-organizing a Conference on Using Film in Language Teaching in conjunction with the Film in Language Teaching Association (www.filta.org.uk).

Background

 

Carmen holds a BA (Hons) Spanish Philology, a BA (Hons) English Philology and a PhD from the University of Valladolid (Spain).  She worked for six years teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Universities of Valladolid, Edinburgh and Ulster. She joined the University as a Lecturer in 1995 and became Principal Lecturer in 2002. From September 2011 to December 2012 she was the Acting Head of the Department of Languages, Information and Communications.  

 

Research Agenda

Carmen is interested in film pedagogy and languages; contemporary Hispanic cinema (gender, genre, and star studies); Ramón Gómez de la Serna and the Spanish Avant-garde. She is also researching in the representation of citizenship movement in contemporary documentaries.

 

Professional Memberships and Activities

She is co-director of Film in Language Teaching Association (FILTA) (www.filta.org.uk), as well as member of Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland (http://www.hispanists.org.uk/), Women in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin-American Studies (http://www.wisps.org.uk), and Le Groupe de Recherche sur l'Image dans le Monde Hispanique (GRImh) (http://www.grimh.org). She is also a member of the editorial board of Comunicar  (www.comunicarjournal.com).

 

Carmen is actively involved in the work of film and language education. She is the co-founder and co-director of FILTA (Film in Language Teaching Association, www.filta.org.uk). She is a programme advisor for Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival at Cornerhouse Cinemas (Manchester) and collaborate in the Education Events for schools and workshops for teachers (Projector) (http://www.cornerhouse.org/). She also collaborates with the National Media Museum (language programme) in Bradford (http://www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk/Educators.aspx). She is also adviser on the COLT Project, part of Route into Languages North West Consortium:  https://www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/northwest.

 

Carmen has organized and led a range of training events for teachers of Modern Foreign Languages and Community Languages, as well as activities for learners, focusing particularly on Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Urdu. She has created over 40 study guides for using films in the language classroom (EFL and ELE). All these on-line materials are available in FILTA and Cornerhouse.
