The core subjects studied are Research and Practice, Management, Search and Retrieval, Information & Knowledge Management, and one core option such as eLearning, Web Search Applications. The MSc Information Management also includes an elective unit, providing a wider degree of choice and the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills complementary to the main subject area of study. Students also design and execute an independent and original research project in the dissertation.
Research and Practice -This focuses on the development of students’ awareness and understanding of key professional and practice issues and the development of their professional skills in response to these issues. It develops students’ skills in the definition, planning and execution of small, often work-based, research projects in a topical professional area.
Management - This unit takes a strategic and operational approach to explore emergent issues in contemporary organisations in today’s complex and changing operating environment.
Search and Retrieval - This unit introduces the professional knowledge and techniques in organizing, modelling and representing information for access, search and retrieval. This includes exploring different metadata schemas and indexing vocabularies ranging from traditional classification schemes to the modern social, semantic and algorithmic approaches.
Information and Knowledge Management - Contemporary organisations operate in a turbulent ‘knowledge economy’. This unit explores strategies and technologies which enable data/ information/ knowledge management to facilitate organisational transformation for sustainability.
Web and Search Applications - This unit introduces the techniques and technologies employed in enhancing content for search, exploration and use.
E-Learning and the Organisation - This unit provides an introduction to teaching and learning principles, from which students are taught how they may be applied to online learning.
The course is recognised and approved by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). Information management career opportunities exist within large corporations, local government, health services, financial and legal services. There may also be opportunities in library and information units in various organisations, for example in the academic, public and business sectors.
