This is the only course of its kind in England. It examines the rise of the Gothic from its beginnings as a late 18th Century genre to aspects of Gothic in modernity, including: sexualities, imperialism and globalisation; new media; science and subjectivity. Students study literature from the 18th Century to the present as well as modern representations of the Gothic in film and television.
The course also offers dedicated Research Skills and Dissertation Preparation Units, equipping students with the skills required for scholarly writing and professional research. Research in the department has been rated highly in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise with some rated as world leading.
This programme may be of interest if you wish to pursue a career in teaching, arts administration, advertising, film and television, publishing, journalism, business and public relations. It will also prepare graduates for higher research programmes such as a PhD and many students take the course as part of their continuing professional development, particularly those who teach. Other graduates have used MA English Studies as a way into high level careers in media, government and third sector charity organisations.
