MA English Studies: Critical Theory

Why choose the MA English Studies: Critical Theory at MMU?

  • Readings of works are organised through thematic pathways, looking at language, textuality, identity, and alterity of all kinds. Defined in this way, this course is one of only four such courses offered at graduate level nationally.
  • We offer a particular specialism in current debates within post-structuralist, psychoanalytical and materialist thought.

What will I be studying?

This programme offers a particular specialism in the ideas of poststructuralist thinkers through the 20th and 21st centuries from Saussure through Foucault, Fanon and Derrida, to Zizek, Baudrillard and Lyotard on the question of the postmodern condition.

There are also two Research Methods units , directed at developing scholarly writing and research at graduate level as well as a wide choice of electives.

 

Career Opportunities

This programme may be of interest if you wish to pursue a career in teaching, arts administration, advertising, film and television, publishing, journalism, business and public relations. It will also prepare graduates for higher research programmes such as a PhD and many students take the course as part of their continuing professional development, particularly those who teach. Other graduates have used MA English Studies as a way into high level careers in media, government and third sector charity organisations.

UK and EU students part-time £445 per 20 credit unit. A Masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits. 

Non-EU overseas students £9,500 

How will I be assessed?

Essays or equivalent and a dissertation for the Masters award.
