Scriptwriting in Practice

Scriptwriting in Practice:  a scriptwriting course, with a specially recruited company of professional actors, offered by The Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University in partnership with North West Playwrights.

Location: Central Manchester

For early-career scriptwriters or graduates with scriptwriting experience, this course emphasises writing for actors, and offers the opportunity to develop an original 45-minute play with

  • a full day’s workshop on your pitch;
  • support of a writing tutor for two drafts of your play;
  • a week of workshopping with a professional acting company and professional theatre directors;
  • the chance to meet and hear professional scriptwriters and producers in two special evening classes.

Extracts from the final scripts will be presented in rehearsed readings as part of MMU’s Script in Hand Showcase for a public audience.

Applicants should already have completed a play for the stage, TV or radio, which can include plays submitted to an undergraduate or other writing course, at MMU, or elsewhere.

For those wishing to gain a formal qualification the course offers 20 credits at MA level which can be taken into a full-length Master’s programme.  Participants taking this course with two other short courses from our suite can gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Creative Writing.

Cost:  £600
