Background

Brief professional biography

I have lectured in the English Department at Manchester Metropolitan University since 2000. Prior to taking up this post I taught part-time at Manchester University’s Department of Drama. I have been an invited lecturer at Manchester University, Huddersfield University, the University of Warwick, and the Helsinki Theatre Academy, Finland. Additionally, I have presented research papers at a number of national and international conferences.

Research interests

Aspects of nineteenth and early twentieth century theatre and performance history; theatre and the law; the supernatural, spiritualism and performance; women and theatre including the New Woman and the stage and women, madness and performance. Publications: Roy Porter & Helen Nicholson (ed.) Women, Madness and Spiritualism, Vol 1: The Writings of Georgina Weldon and Louisa Lowe, (London: Routledge, 2003) and journal articles on Georgina Weldon, aspects of Spiritualism and performance, and the Victorian supernatural.
