Multiculturalism or Muscular Liberalism? Writing on the Wall Festival 2012′s Rebel Ranter will be Benjamin Zephaniah. Is multiculturalism the new whipping boy for the economic crisis or has it really failed? Does it undermine western values? What are western values and what does it mean to be British? Is David Cameron’s ‘Muscular Liberalism’ the answer, or will it lead to a new ‘Powellism’? Join the debate. Benjamin Zephaniah is an award-winning performance poet, playwright, children’s author and political commentator. In 1987 his nomination for a Fellowship in Poetry at Cambridge, was greeted by the Sun headline ‘Would you let your daughter marry this man?’. He has since received 16 honorary doctorates from English universities, but famously refused to accept a nomination for an OBE in 2003. He is currently chair of Creative Writing at Brunel University. He was voted Britain’s third favourite poet of all time (after T.S. Eliot and John Donne) in a BBC poll in 2009.

Another folk n’poetry night Just Poets offer you poetry, prose, folk song and the fun of making it up on the spot. We have rant and rhyme, monologue and dialogue, and we move from Yeats and his mythologies to Keats’ copies of everything he fancied. We listen to the poetic precision of “laughing Lenny” Cohen and to the street – speak of Tom Waits. These sessions are good for the soul, and are always uplifting. The upstairs room has a great atmosphere and the last session turned into a beautifully intimate chat about the power of poetry, interspersed by strong examples of that power from the likes of The Rochdale Ranter, and from Clare, a sweet rapper, and from Michael and Paul and Keith, Val and Pam and Danny and Katie and Julia. Hosts, Just Poets, offer you History re-written in Robin’s parodies, and homage to songwriters like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt from Norm.

Home Sweet Home – a reading course Tutor: Mandy Coe. Poems are like small films, allowing us to witness life and times beyond our own. This filmic legacy of 18th – 20th century writers such as John Gay, Blake, Robbie Burns, Rabindranath Tagore, Sandburg, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson and Gwendolyn Brooks invites us to walk alongside them and see what they saw: the raw and powerful, joyful and sometimes shocking, realities of life in both town and country. This course welcomes poets and/ or readers at all levels. It will cover close reading and discussion, plus workshop activities designed to enhance our understanding of the poems and gain insight into the poet’s craft.

Visions of Britain: A Granta discussion on storytelling and identity What builds community? How do the stories we tell about ourselves shape us? As part of a UK-wide launch of Granta 119: Britain, the magazine of new writing comes to Manchester to explore these questions with photographer Mishka Henner, novelist Nadifa Mohamed (Black Mamba Boy) and poet and author Michael Symmons Roberts (Breath, Edgelands). These Granta contributors will join Granta’s Saskia Vogel to read from and discuss their work on assimilation of immigrant communities in Britain, the changing face of Manchester since the nineteenth century and the 2011 riots. In ten vignettes, each examining a different building in Manchester, Roberts’ takes a lyrical journey through the evolution of work and life in the city from the Industrial Revolution to the office-based tertiary industries of today. Mohamed’s memoir sews together her own story of assimilation as a Somali-born woman in the UK by examining life in Somali communities across Britain. Henner reflects on the police response to the 2011 riots through portraits of alleged looters, compiled from the public domain. Henner is featured in ‘Home’, an art showcase in Granta 119 looking at the idea of British identity today.

Pass on a Poem Would you like to come and read a poem that you enjoy? It’s a very simple idea: you choose a poem, briefly introduce yourself, the poem and the poet and tell us why you chose the poem. It should be a poem that’s published and not written by yourself. We’d need to know the title and author so that we can include you in the programme. If you’d just like to come and listen rather than read, you’re very welcome, just turn up. This is a community event about sharing and enjoying poetry together – it’s not a discussion.

Making a Splash With Words and Art MMU studen tand writer, Sarah James is set to make a show of her home county with a special festival exhibition next month. An Eyeful of Words is a colourful poetry-art exhibition set to make a splash at Droitwich Library gallery. The combined medium exhibition by Worcestershire poet Sarah James, who is in the second year of MA in creative writing (online poetry route) at MMU, aims at using art and photography to open up poetry to wider audience. The photos and canvases, many of which celebrate nature and the local surroundings including shots taken from the local canal tow paths, have been chosen to interact with their accompanying poems and offer an alternate way into the word experience. The exhibition, which also marks the second anniversary of Sarah’s collection Into the Yell, is a Worcestershire Literary Festival event and a Droitwich Music and Arts Festival event. As part of the exhibition, visitors will be invited to contribute their artistic or poetical response to the individual works or whole experience. Sarah will also be running a drop-in poetry workshop, exploring art as a source of inspiration, in Droitwich Library gallery on Saturday, June 23 from 11.00am to 1.00pm. This will focus on the haiku form and taking inspiration from art. It also includes the chance to explore the exhibition and talk to Sarah about An Eyeful of Words and poetry in general. A sneak preview of some of the photos and poems from the exhibition can be downloaded to android phones in the form of two free apps: Pocket Gallery: Pic a Poem and Pic Pocket a Poem .
