Around fifty students from six Tameside schools enjoyed an ACWE writing day here at MMU. The theme for the day was ‘Finding the Story.
MMU tutor and novelist Sherry Ashworth, poet John Siddique and journalist Rachel Broady read from and talked about how they go about finding stories for their work before leading creative writing workshops that took students through the process themselves.
Visiting students from Hyde Clarendon VI Form College, Ashton VI Form College, Alder Community High School. Stamford High School, Astley Sports College.
Littlemoss High School for Boys were able to select two from the three genres on offer.
As ever, feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive and the pupils produced some wonderful work.
Comments included:
“The poetry workshop was the best because everything was just so normal and about feelings not what we had to do and what was expected of us …”
“The prose workshop will aid my approach to coursework”
Best part of the day was … “writing the beginning of a story – which for the first time I enjoyed”“We got to produce a newspaper article … it was a fantastic experience”
“Carry on with this. I think it’s very inspirational. It’s worked on me!
I’m sure it will happen with others”
Pupils were encouraged to expand upon their work after the writing day and to submit entries to the All Write! 2007 competition.
