Continuing Professional Development

ACWE is delighted to offer Masters-level Continuing Professional Development courses in the field of creative writing and reading. The courses listed are aimed at teachers, librarians and freelance writers interested in encouraging creative writing or working in the field of reader development. Previous course participants have found the courses relevant to their work with primary and secondary-age pupils, sixth form pupils and to work with adults in community groups and prisons.

To date, around 50 teachers have taken Teaching Creative Writing Workshop, with many going on to take the project-based ‘Enabling New Writing’ course immediately afterwards. Most are funded by from school CPD budgets. Literature and its Readers is offered for the first time this year as a CPD course, but it has been a unit on the MA Library and Information Management degree for a number of years.

  • Teaching Creative Writing Workshop
  • Literature and its Readers

Each course costs £395 per person and is delivered in twilight sessions (5.30 – 8pm) in MMU’s Geoffrey Manton Building, Oxford Road, Manchester M15 6LL.

Each course carries 20 Masters-level credits, which participants can opt to take by submitting coursework for assessment. Those not wishing to take the credits will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Entry onto MA programmes is not automatic but programme leaders for the MA Creative Writing and the MA in English Studies and the MA Library and Information Management’ encourage applications from students following these CPD courses. Credits can also be transferred to other postgraduate programmes participants may be pursuing (e.g. via the MMU Institute of Education’s MA Education)

Teachers, who have taken courses previously have reported a direct impact on their classroom teaching, finding resources and ideas from the courses immediately relevant. Writers have commented that they feel much better equipped to run workshops having taken the Teaching Creative Writing Workshop course, they have also said that their own writing has improved as a result.
